You have probably heard of the saying, "You become the person that you hang around?" I've found this statement to be true. This is a common saying that is taught throughout life, but it is rarely applied. Why is that? Let's take a step back and look at the root of the problem. Is the problem the people that you are hanging around or is it you? I know that you know this saying, "Birds of a feather flock together." So, the real question is, why are you flying with the wrong flock? To be successful, you must fly with swans.
Getting to the root of the problem: It all goes back to your mindset. I'm sure you are wondering how hanging around people has to do with your mind, but I promise they do connect.
Ten years ago, I decided to run after my dreams. My vision was to become the first female president of the USA or a CEO/President of a company. When I began to share my vision, it became clear to me that the people I hung around did not have the same aspirations or drive toward success. I knew that I needed to hang out with successful leaders so that I can learn and gain wisdom, but I didn't have the experience or title to be taken seriously around high-profile leaders. I knew that the birds of a feather flocked together, but I wasn't in a place to be flying with swans.
Did you know that around 80% of what you think about is what you become? Do you want to win? You must see that you have won! Do you want to be successful? You must see yourself as a successful leader.
“One of the most important things for any leader is to never let anyone else define who you are. And you define who you are. I never think of myself as being a woman CEO of this company. I think of myself as a steward of a great institution.” – Ginni Rometty, former CEO of IBM.
